Other lasers may also be use to ablate or vaporize prostate tissue. The green light or KTP laser permits deeper penetration of the energy into tissue. Because of the deeper penetration and absorption by hemoglobin of the laser energy there is an increased chance of thermal injury to surrounding tissue compared to the holmium laser. This means there is a greater risk of irritating symptoms or complications after the green light procedure.
Some patients have complained of increased incidence of burning sensations during urination or a sense of urgency or frequency of urination for a week or two after treatment with a green laser compared to the holmium laser1. Some patients have also experienced an increased incidence of painful or difficult urination for several weeks to months after the green light procedure compared to the holmium.
